On May 10, Minister Denis announced funding for 62 affordable housing units in Edmonton as part of the goal to create 11,000 new affordable units in Alberta by 2012.

Ten Calgary-based organizations will partner with the Alberta government to develop 297 additional housing units for the homeless. This funding was announced at the Calgary Dream Centre on May 7th. In total, Calgary will receive funding for 433 homes for the homeless in 2009/10.

At an April 22nd event, Minister Denis announced that Alberta has renewed its commitment to Habitat for Humanity by providing $68 million under the 2009/10 Affordable Housing RFP Program. 68 lower income families across the province will soon be proud homeowners thanks in part to this funding commitment.
These affordable units will be developed in the Calgary, Edmonton, Brooks, Camrose, Lethbridge, Olds, Red Deer, Lloydminster and the South Peace areas.

On April 2nd, 2010, Minister Denis spoke at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce in a panel discussion with Tim Richter, President and CEO of the Calgary Homeless Foundation. The topic under discussion was Alberta's 10 year plan to end homelessness.

Housing and Urban Affairs is providing $4.3 million to Alpha-Anderson Joint Venture, to create 39 below-market rental units to house 80 tenants in Edson. Minister Denis is pictured here at the work site with the project proponents as well as the MLA for West-Yellowhead, Mr. Robin Campbell.

On March 19th, Minister Denis announced funding of $5.6 million to Covenant Health to develop 40 units for chronically homeless people in Lethbirdge. The units will be barrier-free studio rentals that include a range of support services targeted to homeless people with mental and physical health conditions.
Lethbridge-West MLA Greg Weadick was on hand for the announcement.

On March 16th, Premier Stelmach and Minister Denis announced funding for the Mustard Seed Society. The Society will receive $12 million to build 112 housing units for the homeless in Calgary and Edmonton.

This day also marked the first anniversary of A Plan for Alberta - Ending Homelessness in 10 Years and Premier Stelmach and Minister Denise provided information on the progress of the plan to date. They report that shelter usage is down in all major cities, more than 900 homes for the homeless are in the works, and more than 1,300 formerly homeless people have been permanently housed and are receiving the supports needed to help them become independent.

The 88-unit affordable housing tower in the Louise Station will provide below-market housing to help working families and people with disabilities. HUA invested $12 million toward the housing development, which officially opened on February 26, 2010.

Minister Denis attends Project Homeless Connect 8 on Saturday, February 20, 2010, at the Suncor Energy Centre in Calgary. Appoximately 700 participants attended this one-day event where homeless or near-homeless individuals and families are provided with services and supplies in one location.
Services provided include medical treatment, mental health services, income support, employment counselling, identification documents, access to housing, and more. Participants can also receive clothing, comfort kit items, haircuts and a nutritious lunch.
